Werakata National Park encompasses 3,337 hectares in the Lower Hunter Region near Cessnock, approximately 10 kilometres east of Cessnock and 30 kilometres west of Newcastle. The park is divided into three distinct sections near Abermain, Kearsley and Kitchener/Abernethy, and is home to native wildlife including koalas, swamp wallabies, echidnas, and numerous bird species. In spring, the park comes alive with colourful wildflowers including native peas, wattles, and grevilleas, making it ideal for birdwatching, walking and cycling trails.
