About Tomaree Lookout

Tomaree Lookout at the summit of Tomaree Head rises 161 metres above Port Stephens at the southern entrance to the bay in Shoal Bay. The popular 2.2-kilometre return walk takes 1.5 to 2 hours featuring paved paths, stone stairs, and steel walkways with unobstructed views of Shoal Bay, Zenith Beach, and the surrounding coastline. World War II remnants including Fort Tomaree radar station and gun emplacements remain visible, while seabirds soar overhead and dolphins may be spotted in the surf.

I'd rate the hike moderate to hard depending on your condition. However, I loved it. Visited it for the first time in 9 years and have to admit , it's one of the best hikes in the region. The view from the top makes the hike worth it.

Tomaree Head Summit Walk is an absolute must-do! The walk is well worth the effort, with stunning views the entire way up and an incredible panoramic view at the summit. Looking out over the coastline, beaches, crystal-clear water, and seeing sealift at the top was breathtaking. The track is well maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, although is quite a steep climb.

The Tomaree Head Summit walk is an absolute must when visiting Port Stephens. The walk takes around half an hour and can be quite challenging, with steep sections along the way, but it’s incredibly rewarding. At the top, you’re greeted with breathtaking panoramic coastal views. Best enjoyed early morning or late afternoon, sunset is especially stunning. Highly recommended.

Did the short walk today and it was absolutely stunning! The scenery and views from the top are amazingβ€”you can see right across Port Stephens and the offshore islands. A heads up: It is quite elevated and steep in sections. If you have any mobility issues or fitness concerns, definitely be careful and take your time. Beyond the views, it’s a lovely spot to see some local history with the WWII gun emplacements and 'war stuff' still visible. There is also a great picnic area if you want to drive to the bottom and relax afterward. A must-do if you're in Shoal Bay!" A few quick "local" tips for your walk: The History: Those gun emplacements you saw were part of Fort Tomaree, built in 1941 to help defend the east coast. The Picnic Spot: The area at the bottom (near Zenith Beach) is perfect for a post-hike breather under the trees. There is also a picnic spot close to the top. Safety: The paved sections can get surprisingly slippery if there’s any dampness or loose grit, so good shoes are a must. Glad you enjoyed the walkβ€”it’s a great way to clear the head!

Worth the hike! Allow for 30+ minutes to the summit depending on your fitness level and age of your fellow hikers. Gorgeous sunset with a great view of Shoal Bay, Zenith Beach, Fingal Spit and more. Was blessed to encounter a Kookaburra at the base of the trail. Easy 9 minute walk along Shoal Bay if you are worried about parking. Don’t forget to take in the views along the way!
