The Tunnel is a Lerderderg River diversion tunnel dug during the Victorian gold rush, most likely between 1855 and 1870, to expose the riverbed for alluvial gold mining. Located inside Lerderderg State Park about 25 km northwest of Bacchus Marsh, the tunnel is reached via a 3 km walk along Byers Track upstream from O'Briens Crossing Picnic Area. Water emerges from the tunnel into a deep pool that serves as a swimming hole in summer.
