Smooth track with no steps until at the lookout itself. 15 mins walk one way from the Reed lookout carpark. The view is good, but the Reed fire watch tower is a less obstructed view. Cool rock formations, but you can't climb down like you used to.

Got lucky to see a wallabie on the way to the lookout. If you like mushrooms, you will love this trekking. It's full of them, different colours and shapes, some seating on the ground and others at the bottom of the trees. Lookout was open and with an spectacular view of the mountains

There’s something instantly recognisable about The Balconies—you’ve probably seen the shot before you even get there. The rock ledge juts out just enough to create that iconic perspective, suspended between foreground and an endless stretch of landscape beyond. It’s not a long walk in, but the moment you step onto the formation, the scale opens up and the composition almost frames itself. Wide valley, layered ranges, and that clean drop beneath you—it’s simple, but it works every time. What makes it memorable is the ritual of getting the shot. This isn’t a solo moment—you bring a friend, line it up, adjust angles, take a few tries to get it right. There’s a bit of coordination involved, a bit of trust in where you’re standing, and when it comes together, it feels earned in a different way. It’s one of those places where the experience and the photo go hand in hand. No regrets—just one of those clean, iconic captures that actually lives up to expectations.

We first did this walk a few years ago on the same day we hiked to the Pinnacle Lookout. It’s really more of a simple walk than a hike. The track from the Reeds Lookout car park is well maintained the whole way, and the return walk is roughly 2 km, taking less than an hour. It’s a great option if you want to enjoy the park’s scenery without a tough climb. The lookout gives you wide, open views across the jagged mountain ranges that shape the heart of the Grampians. If you’re visiting the area, this is definitely a must‑do and is suitable for all ages. I’ve seen comments saying the Balconies are no longer accessible, but I was fortunate enough to access them and take photos on them.

The Balconies is another most iconic lookouts in the Grampians, known for its dramatic rock ledges that jut out over a vast valley, with spectacular panoramic views. It requires a 2km easy walk (return) from the car park, making it accessible for many visitors. The spot is highly photogenic, especially in the late afternoon, and is often the best spot with nearby Reeds Lookout for sunset view. However, caution is needed near the cliff edges as there are limited safety barriers!
