I visited St Kilda Beach in December 2025 on a warm summer evening with some friends, and while the beach itself isn’t my favourite in Melbourne, the overall atmosphere of the area made for a fantastic night out. Getting there is easy whether you’re driving or using public transport. We drove and parked near the cruise terminal end of the beach, but there are plenty of parking options around the area, particularly near Luna Park and along the foreshore. Most parking is either paid or time limited, so it’s worth checking the signs carefully. If you’re catching public transport, St Kilda is well serviced by trams, with several routes stopping along the main road just a short walk from the beach. We set ourselves up on the sand near the pier and spent a few hours relaxing, chatting, and making the most of the warm evening. There were plenty of other groups doing the same, along with families enjoying the shallows and people cooling off in the water. Like many beaches around Port Phillip Bay, the water is generally quite calm without big waves, making it more of a paddling and relaxing beach than a surf destination. We did hop into the water briefly, and it was nice enough for a quick cool down, but if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think St Kilda Beach is Melbourne’s best beach when it comes to swimming. Being such a busy inner city beach, conditions can vary quite a bit depending on the season, weather, and water quality. It’s always worth checking local water quality updates before swimming, particularly during summer when there can occasionally be warnings about water conditions or marine stingers. For me, the real highlight of St Kilda isn’t actually the beach itself, it’s everything surrounding it. As the sun started to set, we wandered along the pier and took in the views across the bay. Watching the city slowly light up while the sky changed colours was beautiful. Afterwards we headed up towards the Luna Park end of the foreshore, and that’s where the area really came alive. There was a drum circle playing along the boardwalk, fire twirlers performing for crowds, musicians entertaining passers by, and groups of people gathering together to enjoy the evening. It felt incredibly vibrant and community focused. There was something happening everywhere you looked, and the energy was contagious. The whole foreshore is lined with cafes, restaurants, bars, and takeaway food options, so there’s always somewhere nearby to grab a drink, dinner, or a snack. It feels less like a traditional beach destination and more like one of Melbourne’s major social hubs. Between the beach, Luna Park, the pier, the restaurants, and the nightlife, there’s always something going on. I think that’s what makes St Kilda special. The beach itself is fine, it’s pleasant enough to sit on the sand, enjoy the sunset, and cool off in the water, but it’s the atmosphere around it that keeps people coming back. The mix of locals, tourists, backpackers, performers, and community groups gives the area a unique energy that’s hard to find elsewhere in Melbourne. If you’re looking for crystal clear water and pristine swimming conditions, there are definitely better beaches around Victoria. But if you’re looking for a fun evening out, good food, live entertainment, beautiful sunsets, and a classic Melbourne experience, St Kilda is absolutely worth visiting. I always enjoy spending time there, even if it’s the atmosphere more than the beach itself that keeps me coming back.

Nothing spectacular about this beach. There was a smell in the air and the sand murky. Small flies everywhere and flies into your face so not pleasant. Very quiet when we visited. Easily reached via a short tram ride from the Centre. A few places to dine.
