About Shell Beach Conservation Park

Shell Beach Conservation Park in Shark Bay is one of only two shell beaches in the world, stretching 60 kilometres along the coast and reaching depths of ten metres in places. The beach is composed entirely of cockle shells that have accumulated due to the bay's naturally high salinity. Entry is free, and the hypersaline water—similar to the Dead Sea—makes floating effortless. The Malgana Aboriginal people are acknowledged as the traditional custodians of this remarkable landscape.

It was really nice, lots of shells near water edge.

A beautiful and interesting place, the beach is entirely made up of shells. Great place to visit with great sea view and lots of information boards around to learn about the area. Communal ablutions onsite, lots of fun.

We visited here on our way up to Monkey Mia. I had been here before years ago and do not remember there being so many flies. It was so bad that we spent about 5 minutes here. It was such a shame as it is a interesting place.

We didn't go swimming while we were there, they say you come out with a crust of salt on you as the water is twice as salty as the ocean. There were tables and chairs under a shelter and toilets. There are sign with history explaining how the beach became.

Interesting beach. One of a kind. Instead of walking on a white sandy beach, this one is made up of the tiny shells that have accumulated up to 10 metres deep, forming a beach stretching 120 kilometres. Swimming is allowed. Interpretive signs along the short walk between the car park and the beach help us to understand the shell beach story. Toilet is available.
