About Lunatic Hill Open Cut

Located in Lightning Ridge's Walgett Shire, NSW, this preserved monument marks the largest open-cut black opal mine in the state and one of the richest precious black opal sources ever discovered. The mine holds historical significance for its hand-cut workings from the earliest opal mining days at Lightning Ridge, with associations to author and miner Ion Idriess. The 1986 discovery of 'Halley's Comet,' a 2020-carat black opal measured at 110mm x 66mm x 63mm and valued at $6 million, represents one of the largest recorded black opal findings.
