About Hopkins Falls

Hopkins Falls near Warrnambool are Victoria's widest cascades spanning an impressive 90 metres at 11 metres high, resembling curtains of water tumbling over dark basalt rocks. Located 15km northeast of Warrnambool, the falls feature gas BBQs, toilets, and easy walking paths to pools below. For a few days in early summer, baby eels migrate upstream over the falls, and the area holds cultural significance for the Girai Wurrung people.

Good little stopover if you're going to Warrnambool. The waterfall is along the way, just off the main road. There's plenty of car spaces and you can view the waterfalls from 2 viewing platforms right next to the car park. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you can also go on a little walk down a few steps to view the waterfalls from a bit closer. As a bonus you can also see some curious cows as you go through the little pathway.

Such an amazing spot and the falls itself and surrounding area is so pretty. Not a far walk at all to get to the bottom. Would definitely recommend, cute picnic area and toilets are in great condition as well

Parking and picnic area with toilets were ok/tidy, but the walk down to the river bank is more than I was willing to do after a work day. The angle for taking photos would be better after a walk.

Our first stop of the day was Hopkins Falls, located only about 13km (around 14 minutes) from Warrnambool. The drive out was very scenic, with lush green countryside thanks to recent rain, which made the journey itself quite enjoyable. Arriving at the falls, you cross a small bridge before entering a car park that has plenty of space, including areas suitable for caravans as well as single cars. There are picnic tables and open grassy areas, making it a good spot to stop and relax. From the car park, two viewing platforms provide excellent vantage points from the side of the falls. The real highlight though is walking down the hill, where well-maintained stairs and a path take you closer to the base. From there you get a spectacular near front-on view of the water cascading over the wide rock ledge. The water flow was strong during our visit, and the spray combined with the sound of rushing water created a memorable atmosphere. It’s also a fantastic location for photography, with the surrounding landscape of open fields and gum trees framing the scene beautifully. We arrived at around 9:30am outside school holiday time and found it very peaceful with only a few others there. If you’re in Warrnambool, Hopkins Falls is definitely worth the short drive. A beautiful natural wonder that won’t disappoint.
