About Gibson Steps

Gibson Steps is an iconic Great Ocean Road stop in Port Campbell National Park, where 86 steps descend to the base of 70-metre limestone cliffs adjacent to The Twelve Apostles. The beach access provides a dramatic perspective of two of the famous stacks (locally named Gog and Magog) from sea level, accessible in 30-45 minutes.

If you have mobility and can get down steps easily..I would HIGHLY recommend. It's just so surreal and calming walking along the beach marveling at the beauty of the 12 Apostles. Definitely worth the stop!

Walk down the steps to the beach. Although the slope is steep, the view of the Gibson Steps from below is even more spectacular. Can park car at the Gibson Steps parking lot or walk from the Twelve Apostles parking lot (2.2 km round trip). Due to limited shade along the trail, driving is recommended in the summer.

We based ourselves in Port Campbell which was a short 10min drive away. It allowed us to visit early in the morning around 9am and had the beach all to ourselves. We checked the tide schedule and were able to safely access the beach close to Gog and Magog. Instead of parking at Gibson Steps, we parked at Twelve Apostles and took a leisurely 15min walk to Gibson Steps which made for a good morning stroll along the coast

We had a great time here. The parking place can get full very quickly and there can be a chaos when people start to just stop everywhere, but if you are lucky you will have parking place. You can get to the beach quickly, but be carefull with the snakes. We have seen one huge tigersnake (?). On the beach you will have the best photo spots.

This is along the Great Ocean road and well worth the stop. Stairs are steep but give you a good feel for how steep the cliffs are here. Beautiful to walk along the beach and get some photos of the area.
