π Cape Otway, VIC
Cape Otway Lightstation is Australia's oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland, built in 1848 without mortar by over 40 stonemasons on towering sea cliffs 90 metres above where the Bass Strait and Southern Ocean meet. For 19th century migrants, Cape Otway was often their first sight of land after months at sea. The complex features Aboriginal cultural sites, a WWII radar bunker, observation deck with coastal views, Telegraph Station displays on the 1859 undersea cable link to Tasmania, and land-based whale watching opportunities June to spring.
