About Calliope River Rest Area
Calliope River Rest Area offers free camping for up to 48 hours on each of its two separate camping areas, allowing travellers to stay up to four days total. Located just off the Bruce Highway west of Gladstone, the low-maintenance facility sits on the banks of the Calliope River with basic toilet amenities and designated camping zones. Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead, fishing is available, and gas or kerosene stoves are the only cooking option allowed.

We have ways love this spot. Easy access to great river front camps. Fishing. Camping. Camp fires. Very quiet.

Nice place to stop for one night. The toilets are clean, and you can enjoy a bit of fishing.

Please do not swim in this river. Stonefish Bull sharks, crocodiles and Irukandji jellyfish, are just some of the danger's in this area including snakes. If heavy rain is expected please choose the hill on the other side access near Calliope Markets. Toilets are available but no guarantees they are open or working. No driving through the causeway but ideal for fishing. Boat ramp access via North rest area. (Low side which can flood!!!). Let it be known the flood can reach the Highbridge if a cyclone 🌀 or extreme rainfall. ( Taken 17/11/25)

Found this campground on Campedia. We stayed one night on the north side in the self-contained area, just down on the grass. Easy to access, level spots, and so green! It was fairly quiet with a bit of road noise but nothing major. The south side is busier with amenities and more travellers – worth the short walk across the little bridge (that people were fishing off) to check it out. There’s no drinking water and no dump point on site. On my toilets are on the other side of the river. Saw signs about crocs and jellyfish but didn’t see any! This is a great free stop for a night or two. Would definitely stay again 😁
