About Boyd's tower
An 1847 sandstone tower built by Benjamin Boyd as a private lighthouse, standing 23 metres high and now an iconic landmark overlooking Twofold Bay. Though never used as an official lighthouse, the tower served as a whale-spotting site and later helped alert whaling crews to migrating whales—a role that persists: September through November sees hundreds of whales and calves move through these waters, making it prime viewing season. The tower marks the starting point of the Light to Light Walk and offers fascinating glimpses into the colonial era when Boyd established a short-lived but ambitious town around this structure.
