Kalkajaka National Park (also called Black Mountain National Park) is a 781-hectare area 25km southwest of Cooktown featuring granite boulders as large as houses creating maze-like passages. The landscape is the world's only habitat for three endemic animals—the Black Mountain boulderfrog, skink and gecko. Kalkajaka ('place of spear') holds deep cultural significance for Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal Traditional Owners with numerous Dreaming stories.
